Dress, vintage. Bag, Christian Dior. Sandals, Gucci.
This dress was another one of my cheap second-hand finds--in fact, a good majority of my closet is vintage and secondhand. There is nothing worse than spending a ton of money on little bits of clothing. It is the exclusivity factor that expensive and limited fashion pieces buy you, just something else to brag about--without saying a word. Why should anything have to be the expensive...we'll I know why, but I still think it is completely stupid, and I'll admit it; I own some really stupid pieces that I really regret now. I used to think fashion was important, but what that really means is I used to think buying an image was important. How could I not when the only thing that is glorified anymore is image.
I really liked Alice Delall's most recent i-D Magazine interview when she spoke of all her copycat clones with undercuts and such, seemingly pinpointing people would follow anything if they thought it would get them a little recognition, when a few years ago they were bohemian followers of the church of Sienna Miller. I have spent a lot of time around the image obsessed world, and celebrities, and I wish I could tell every person who wants to get involved in that kind of life how much of a farce it is--that is why all these famous people end up with these horrid stories, addictions, and who knows what else, because all of that is void of any fulfillment. I sometimes even have second thoughts about keeping this blog, myspace, or any of that--I never want people to think that any of this holds any true importance, we're all just kids posting silly outfits, but somehow even having a blog (for free nonetheless) has become something to brag and compete for status with.
Anyone who has spent any time in Hollywood knows how grimy it is. People there would sell their own mothers for a little bit of exposure. I was offered several small parts in lame movies after I did the Rolling Stone TV show, none of which I took for obvious reasons--you see how I feel about this business (and I'm not a fucking actress), I may look the part, but never't be fooled by the books cover. Although, I did work pre-production on a film that will be released in 2010, and my job ended up getting completely sidelined after three of the producers hit on me, and I turned them all down one by one--all that casting couch cliche stuff happens daily, the glamor that they sell is only an image, and you really don't want to know what's behind the finished product, because it would deter you completely. If people knew the truth about the majority of the entertainment industry, I think they would be less eager to get involved, or make it their life's work when everyone is just a puppet--an easily replaceable one at that. There are originals out there, and then there are the rest of them, waiting for the next big trend, or the next cult-hero model/rich kid/celebrity to worship.

I adore the dress. Red is a great color on you. I totally agree with everything you're saying. When people find out that I'm an actor, they automatically assume those things about me. But I guess I just was raised with better morals. Great post!
I too, worked in film, here in Vancouver BC, for many years. From going to screenwriting meetings in LA to trying to break in up here, it's all a farce. I may go back into the biz one day - if I even can - BUT it doesn't hold any allure anymore, once you know the truth.
It's true, a lot of bloggers use their blogs to gain attention and brag about their latest purchases - there is a huge difference between gloating and sharing.
I am just glad your blog has none of that. You love to share your views and awesomely fab finds and we love to view it!
Keep up the good work, Golden Girl!
BRAVO!
*Lusty*
That's why I don't live in LA... can't stand all that. Don't give up the blog though... there's so much more to the outfits we wear than just the clothes... it's the thought process behind them, what we feel when we get dressed; there's a certain creative process i go through every day when I decide what to wear... there's nothing silly about that.

PS - the exclusivity (and history) of vintage is what makes it so appealing, so true!
i love the dress!!!!!!!
xx. A
yes! la makes me feel the need to escape after being in the city for a few hours!
great blog!!!
great post - as ever... i just don't understand the fame thing! i'd rather just live quietly, actually be respected, actually be kind... and finding bargains and mixing it up a bit is much more fun anyway!
beautiful dress. sigh.

I am in love with that dress. What a great find babygirl. If I haven't said it before, the shoes are killer also. I really do find your writing brilliant, and adore that bit about blogging. I'm so feeling you on that haha.

I seriously thought that was obvious for everyone in the world, how blindly following trends and other "hot" people is useless and how hollywood isn't as shiny as people paint it... but I have realized there will always be both sides to any story and there will always be people who do follow blindly, people who compete to be REALLY important on this thing called blogosphere and then, on the other side, people who are just having fun and seriously, I get bored by some of the comments given on my blog. It's like some people don't read anything, like they're trying to suck your presence into the vortex of their own blogs just so they can count one more comment. I don't get it. I may say: "hey, I have cute cats!" but if I don't put a wide picture for easy viewing then people just go over it and say: "NICE DRESS!" when it's actually a goddamn jumpsuit and I wrote the freacking story there!...
Sorry to be venting here, but I just had to.
great, great post. It really hit home!
biru's got a point. I mean...just reading other comments above...come on!
And Krystal, thank you for writing the way you do. I thoroughly enjoy coming to your site. As much as I'd hate for you to discontinue blogging; I'd understand every blogger has to put their real lives, beliefs, and sanity first.
You look fantastic.
your gorgeous with impeccable taste, that goes without saying... BUT you're wearing a Dior bag while saying how stupid expensive designer clothing/accessories are?
It is a lovely dress, but the colors looks different on the last picture than the others. Is it red or pink?
I really like the courage and honesty you show by saying the things you do about the industry. I admire you for that.

I love this post, so much truth. It makes me sad that some people live to follow others in hopes of being recognized/looking cool/whatever...
ANYWAYS... you look lovely and I adore that dress.
xo
i'm so glad that there are people like you in the world. you give me hope in humanity.
I agree. Hollywood is a lot darker than we know. I love your dress you look stunning. I did not know that you were a poet. Amazing!
Its true ...one can look great with a cheap outfit ..it just depends on the person
some ppl wear clothes with great brand that costs a lot ..but they dont look that good
xxx
ps. I totally adore that red dress... and u look awesome!
hello krystal! i am always inspired by your blog. i like your style and you really pull off every outfit you wear!
i like your dress!

this dress is so beautiful-and its a great color on you! and i honestly loved reading this post.
I hear ya girl. My favorite aspect about blogworld is that style is found in the most unexpected places. The most admirable style is not from any cheesy celebrity, but from regular girls who we can all engage with. Of course there are girls who religiously look to the Olsen twins for inspiration but I prefer seeing what other cool, regular women, with normal jobs, are wearing.
I love all of your photos. Bakers has a decent knockoff of your Gucci shoes.
www.tittees.blogspot.com
Well it's a very glamorous dress and probably more special than if you bought from a current collection.
Word.
I don't I'll spend a great amount on my clothes, probably ever. (especially since Forever 21 make knock offs for everything pretty popular)
But yeah, I totally agree with what you're saying. I'm learning all about that in one of classes. It looks so great on the outside.
I'm glad you held your ground with those douchebags. (;
wow! this dress is amazing! I agrre... we are always buying image and not the "real clothes"...
wooooowwwww I adore the dress ON YOU, the red color is just PERFECT ....... BEAUTIFUL KRISTAL
Gorgeous dress!
this is lovely...:)
beautiful photos! red is clearly one of your colors.
i love the viscosity of your tone here. your last few posts seem to focus on self-righteousness and pro-individualism, and not to be nosy, but is something compelling this? just wondering =]
oh and the dress is KILLER on you. i was about to go postal when i read it was vintage instead of some valentino number. i wish i had legitimate vintage shops here. hope you're swell doll <3
This dress is gorgeous on you, I love it's color :)
love the dress.
so dreamy.
thanks for writing this.
SOOO true.
i find that blogging is a blessing and that i want to reach people on another level.
i strive to be genuine + compassionate in everything that i do.
fashion for me is fun, but holds no life value! b/c in the end it is just stuff, fun stuff, but just stuff!
hopefully i do not sound like a hypocrite as i still love dressing up and shopping, but i will never let it define me.

"There is nothing worse than spending a ton of money on little bits of clothing"
So should be just ignore the Gucci shoes, the Dior bag, the Chanel bag, Dior glasses, Cartier watch or the Balenciaga bags you include in this or other posts?
Seems a tad hypocritical.
absoultely fantastic! :)
This dress is AMAZING!! You look gorgeous.
xx
Babes, your brains distract from your beauty! It so fantastic that you speak your mind, so open, vivid and clever, especially considering the fact that your image, looks, beauty DO meet all of this industry standards, but still you dont get sucked in..
Sick dress. The sleeves are so unique :) & I love this post. Very deep.
Loooove your dress! Totally agree with you on the entertainment thing, that's why I'm doing something else!
http://www.wreckedstellar.wordpress.com
wow i love the dress, is it red or pink
I completely agree! I live in VA now, but I lived in NYC for 5 years, and it's pretty much the same deal. Lots and lots of fake people. I understand when people from small towns move to the big city to "make it" they think they should change to the fit the mold, but when you completely lose your personal identity...it's just not worth it.
As for the mention of the blog popularity contest...good lord that bothers me so much. It's gotten so out of control, that when I read a blogger's post talk about their new favorite brand or item from a store, I can't take them seriously b/c half the time 3 days later the designer has sent them the piece for free. It's just seems some bloggers only post about things they want for free or have already been sent for free and feel like they have to blog about it. Having a "fashion" blog is not shallow and one dimensional unless you make it that way.
As always, love your pics and love your words of wisdom.
xo-Liz
That dress is beautiful and I always enjoy reading your posts, they're insightful and unpretentious. x
Nice job- great pics and words.
Truely in love with the shoes (L)! x
i really like your blog! one of my favourites
I think it is sad that you couldn't even work on a film without some losers hitting on you. Please don't give up the blog. It may be image based, but at least it can be a source of inspiration for real artists, to create things and make up their own worlds, something of real value and importance. I mean, I guess I do think image is over-rated, but would you listen to the same music, if they wore sweats, or disreagrd art, becuase it has an image? I don't know if I would, I really don't.
Sorry, this is ridiculously long.

To Anon number 2, we are all hypocritical on some level.
No one among us is perfect. I am a vegan in diet, but I wear leather shoes, and cary leather bags. I don't apologize for this, because we all do what we can in this world. We all have ideas to share, and we are, some of us anyway, trying to figure out what the bigger picture in life is.
I think what Krystal is suggesting, is that we look a little deeper into ourselves, rather than getting caught up in an image, and in particular, one that an industry dictates.
There is nothing at all wrong with having nice things, or even spending a lot of money on something that you really love.
I love beautiful things, but they speak nothing about who I am on a deep level, and the things I have are but a small expression of me.
I try to buy things I love, so that I don't have any regret.
Sometimes I get caught up in envy and feel like I am lacking in some way, because I just don't have the luxury to buy what I want when I want. When I do this, I have lost sight of what is real, and It is nice to be reminded from time to time.
I appreciate this post very much.
Thank you
Arline
I love these pictures. You're a cutiepie! :D
Love the dress Krystal. And I know exactely what you are talking about.
You look beautiful!
I love that you can write about this stuff without sounding like a self important dick. but to be honest, thinking about that sort of thing in context depresses me, not only because I know that the likelihood of me getting to where I want to be is slim, but because even if I do achieve it then it means that there are so many other people who can't. Frustrating, but there you have it.
I love hearing what you have to say. x
Oh, adorable dress! Look so great.

Your posts are so amazing to read! I especially like the line "We're all just kids posting silly outfits", that's so true. Having a blog sometimes makes me embarrassed, like I'm saying "Oh, hey, everybody, look how cute I am!". Blogging feels like such a big competition but then I do enjoy sharing my outfits with other people, and it's such a fun thing to do!
The dress is so stunning on you!
you are soo wonderfully eloquent! are you still doing journalism krystal?

Great dress! I read your blog every day and feel like you are going through some rough spots about finding your place & having to make a stand about it in a way. I just wanted to say to stick to your guns and don't get cynical. Keep the fresh happy approach to life - it serves you in greater stead then anything else can!!
You always give off this amazing mix of glamour with rock & roll.
I Know What I Am - by Band of Skulls comes to mind!! :]

U ain't never lie............snapping furiously>>>preach on sister!!!!! u look fantastic as always
AMAZING.
i love your posts :)

ps) if you want to and have time, i tagged you in something
very beautiful dress, red is your color!
Whomever feels that fashion and designer items is about buying yourself a glorified image-and practices this- is completely missing the point of fashion. I feel sorry for the growing population of fashion victims that have lost their individuality and respect for the true art of what fashion is.
I understand what you're saying about the blogs...and the recognition, I suppose. However, I don't think it's true for everyone, even if just a small handful.
Some people have ideas, unique ideas, and to make those ideas alive, recognition is required. For what is an idea, if you can't share it with the world?
xx. Mavi
The dress is fantastic an you look really beautifull on it
i love this dress. and i bet if you tried you could be " a fucking actress" a great fucking actress i bet!

Reading your posts brings me back down to earth with a bump, I officially HEART you!

GOD I love your blog. It is really incredibly nice and refreshing to read something intelligent.

no joke, i once had a dream about a magical red dior dress made of whispers and stardust. i had to wear black chucks and leather cuffs just to tone its goddessness down. when i woke up i sketched it, then searched ebay for it. i believe you are wearing its sister.
Hi Krystal,
I just found your blog this evening and I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far.
This post in particular is something I completely agree with.. The whole modern-day celebrity obession is something that really annoys me. And I too, am a firm believer in thrifting and creativity, as apposed to overpriced fad-fashion.
Money certainly doesn't buy style.
