On the road again; I'm always trying to pack all the things I need for a variety of climates that currently fall into the category cold and colder - I'm so happy to have this Aubin & Wills coat to throw over everything I own. I really hate packing due to the fact that something is always left behind, and it's usually something I really need. Due to that fact, I try to keep it simple, and keep my luggage under the airport baggage weight limits. I currently just finished with some work in L.A., and I'm about to start a marathon of my favorite TV shows to decompress - Shameless, Californication, and The Real Housewives of Atlanta all airing on the same night is like a gift from the gods.

Getting ready to go back to New York next week--still so happy that I was able to get my hair cut before the trip. 2011 was rough on my hair; from light to dark, then back to light again really took a toll on it, and cutting some of it off really felt cleansing (and really, shorter hair is so much easier to deal with).

Some Girls

I'm so happy I was able to see my hair stylist before the holiday season starts to get crazy, or before my hair felt any longer and thicker. She cut off about three + inches today in what we've deemed the femme-mullet in the past due to the insane amount of layers she always cuts into my hair to keep it shaggy, and not overly thick or unruly. I really hate it when it looks too pretty and perfect, and you'll probably never see it flat-ironed unless I have no say in the matter. The first layer is only about 3-4 inches long, and the overall length hits just above the collarbone, so there is tons of movement, and it breaks up the natural wavy/curly texture I've got to work with, but the best part is it doesn't take four hours to dry (no joke, it takes at least that long to dry naturally if it's not thinned out and abundantly layered). I really loved the final result, I feel like Mick Jagger circa 1968 in the Rock and Roll Circus era.

Gonzo journalism, that's my jam; and why I started this blog way back in 2007, and, man how time flies. When I first started writing for pay, I searched far and wide for an employer that would give me free reign and carte blanche, and I lucked out on my first gig, which entailed writing my own column twice a month for the now defunct Peninsula Post. I think I got something like $100 a piece, and more importantly: my byline. After that I worked for several other papers with sketchy characters rivaling that of The Rum Diary, and also a few literary journals on the side before I went to New York to learn from Rolling Stone; made for TV style, and boy-oh-boy did I learn a lot. When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. What I didn't know back then is if I had a vision, I was going to have make it happen myself, and out of my frustration, What is Reality Anyway was born and the rest, well, you can Google. So thank you Dr. Gonzo, but I do believe you said it best:

Temperature

Even though it never gets that cold in California, I still find anything under 65 degrees absolutely bone-chilling. I like fashion and all that jazz, but if I'm cold I don't care if it looks like I've wrapped myself in a burlap sack as long as I'm not feeling the chill. I've pretty much been living in this sweater thanks to American Apparel, and I've invested in a few more to keep me cozy till Spring. When I find something I love this much, I try to buy it in a few colors, or duplicates--just in case.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving/long weekend! I swore I was going to abstain from any and all Black Friday activities, that is, until I accidentally checked out Net-a-Porter sale, then it was all downhill from there; that day I picked up a chandelier, a mirrored end table, an oven, dishwasher, some paint, a cabinet refinishing kit, and a cal-king-sized bed frame and mattress (I finally got fed-up with my feet hanging off the end of my queen sized mattress). I'm in the middle of a slight home remodeling process, and getting this stuff for 50% off or more was a must for me, unless I wanted to stretch out the job for a few years, or cut corners and settle for the cheap shit, which I'd just end up replacing twice as often anyway. So in hindsight, I'm actually glad I ventured out on that hellish day and saved some serious cash on things you never think about buying--light bulbs and hard wood flooring anyone?

In 3rd grade I cut all my hair off like Jean Seberg and wore clothes from the boy's department. I played in the dirt, and swam with my shirt off. "This is what granddaughter looks like," my grandfather said while showing everyone a picture from the year before. Strangers would use he's, and him's. My mom told everyone it was just a phase; "she'll grow out of it," she would say. My neighbor told me I looked like Bowie. Girls at school called me a freak; the boys didn't care what I wore as long as I could run fast, and play ball.

Miracle in the Twilight Zone

I'm currently home for the holiday's, and thankful to be here with so many of the people I love. Tonight I'm going out with friends I've known since junior high--definitely one of the best perks about going home for the holidays. Since my parents passed away, the holidays can sometimes be a bazaar and hollow time for me; in the past I've compared it to Twilight Zone meets Miracle on 34th Street with a little Home Alone in there somewhere. I'm really thankful to have so many wonderful friends that have become my family over the years and invited me into their homes, and given me so much love, and even though Thanksgiving might not be the same without my family, it's become something new that I've started to look forward to every year. Happy holidays everyone!

Sight for Sore Eyes

The two things in my closet that I wear the most are tees and leather pants. They're both things that you can just throw on, and you're good to go. Other wardrobe necessities include both denim and leather jackets, Chelsea boots, a black wide-brimmed hat, a navy blue suit jacket, Breton striped shirts, blue and black jeans, a white blouse, and a great set of flannel P.J's. This was my weekend holiday party look. I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend! My new favorite thing to do on Saturday's is nothing at all, especially since I usually start the weekend activities on Thursday, so really, Saturday is the new Sunday, and Sunday rules pretty hard because Real Housewives of Atlanta is on! I think my ideal gig would be commentating on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. Not-so-guilty pleasures aside, today I got out of bed at the crack of 1:30, and had iced tea's on the patio followed by lunch that Aaron brought over, and right now it would take an event of epic proportions to get me out of the house tonight.

I didn't cut my hair off, it's stashed in my hat, but I've been strongly contemplating cutting my hair a little bit shorter. For me, 2011 was the year of extreme color experimentation, and the aftermath: extreme damage. As it turns out, bleach, to dark brown, and back to to bleach might be something you want to avoid doing to yourselves, luckily I was in the hands of a great stylist, otherwise my hair might have turned to mush. I had a lot cut off already, and I really prefer shorter hair--it's so much easier! My hair is so thick that it takes all day to dry naturally without a blow dryer intervening, and I dread the hair washing process completely, so a little cut could really do the trick.

Unlike a lot of people, I have a love affair with high waisted jeans--or anything high waisted for that matter. I feel that the higher waists of say, Levis 501's, or the hip-defining 70's high waisted bells really show off women's shape, and I think that shape should be embraced and appreciated instead of hidden or slimmed down to fit the airbrushed and photoshopped standard of beauty that mainstream media sells. True, I'm a huge tomboy, and advocate of menswear of any kind, but it doesn't mean I want to get rid of all the worlds curves and stuff them into a pair of skinny jeans or a suit. I grew up just like a lot of you out there; comparing myself to the people I saw on TV and in magazines, and it was only recently that I started to accept that those things are all lighting, makeup, and computer trickery, and that I'm doing great just the way I am--hips and all. We all want to be flawless and forever-young like a 15 year old supermodel, but I had to finally acknowledge that in real life people have pores, bed head, wrinkles, the occasional blemish, and the lighting isn't always studio-flattering. We're all born with a different set of genetics, and most people aren't naturally stick-thin, and that's not a curse; it's the way it should be.

It's finally gotten a little cold in California, or California-Cold; 48-60 degrees to a Californian is absolutely bone chilling. I live in layers; a t shirt under a shirt, under a sweater (I have this one in 5 colors--what can I say, I love uniform dressing.), under a jacket, and after all that, I can't bend my arms and I'm still cold. I can deal with the temperature drop because the holiday season is arguably the most fun because it revolves around my three favorite things: parties, food, and presents. Just the other night Virginia and Sarah came over for a party disguised as a photo shoot, and I added some bleach to Virginia's completely natural blonde hair. She also shot a video of the process, but in the meantime you can see some behind the scenes photos here on Sarah's photography blog.

I'm wearing my heart like a crown

Today my Mother Judith would have turned 65.

I tried to do some of the things she would have loved to do today, but I still feel like the world is a much darker place since she's been gone. Most of the time I try not to think about her, going there still hurts as much as it did when I saw her dying in a hospital bed--maybe more actually. She had me later in her life, and raised me as a single mother, so our relationship was a little different that some; but we were best friends, and I wouldn't change a thing if I could. I don't think I have the right words right now to go any further into detail, but I read this poem every year around this time to remember my Mom on her Birthday.

When I sleepwalk into your room,
and pick you up,
and hold you up in the moonlight,

I got the scar on my lip in 5th grade playing baseball when a ground ball launched itself into my face last minute thanks to a tiny hidden rock on the field. Alas, the trials and tribulations of being born a tomboy; things like these can easily be retouched, but I think it's the so-called "imperfections" that add much needed character in a world of robotic uniformity.

This time of year gets particularly tough for me, with all the holiday's and family gatherings, I really notice the absence of the people that I've lost, especially my Mother. She really loved this holiday, and even dressing up and painting her face--maybe that's where I get it from--so I always try to do something to observe the holiday, and this year it involved some costume parties, and a photo shoot with my photographer friend Sarah, and Virginia and I played a Sugar Skull husband and wife. I'll be sure to share those photos when I see them myself, but you can see some video's from the party on my Viddy page.

These faux-suede Bandito Bells by American Gold are my new favorite pants, I'm actually wearing them again right now--they're so comfortable, you'll just want to sit around in them all day, every day, and I thought they added the perfect touch to my sugar skull outfit. Aaron took these right before I went out the door. It's always fun to be the adult with your entire face painted two days after Halloween.

This is what I wore to run errands around town today--it was finally cold enough to wear leather pants, so I took full advantage of the opportunity. I'm really excited that Halloween season is in full swing; so many parties, so little time! Tomorrow I'm going wig and mustache shopping with my friends for this year's costume, or one of them that is. If I don't dress up in costume at least twice I consider it a personal Halloween failure.

I love ugly clothes, and weirder the better; high-waisted jeans, overalls, onezies and jumpsuits, nothing is off limits. I'm not really concerned about the way the garment will make my body look, or if it could pass for a maternity item or not, but with the overall bad-assness of the piece, so these overalls are one of my favorites, always there to make me farmer-chic in one easy step.

I'm spending time around California's Bay Area, and the temperatures have been hovering in the mid 80's--in October! Global warming/endless summer phenomenon aside, the temperature outside has brought on tons of activities ripped straight from our favorite summer movies like beach hang-outs, and iced teas out on the patio, it's really hard to believe Christmas is only about two months away! Later tonight in real Dazed and Confused fashion, I'm meeting up with my friends, and they're taking me to a bowling alley bar. Hopefully I'll soon be reporting on a backyard kegger or a pool party. All right, all right, all right!

Time Waits for No One

I'd like to say that I'm officially adding Thursday to the weekend grouping of days. Why not drag on the rest and relaxation a little longer? When you work for yourself, it's easy to work 18 hour days, and forget that you need to take time for yourself doing whatever it is that puts you into vacation mode. I feel like I've been going non-stop for 5 or 6 years full of travel, events, shoots, gigs, hotels, cramped road trips, greasy fast food, and of course emails, and I realized that I need to start living life a little more, and taking time to enjoy what I've worked for instead of just discarding it and moving on the the next thing without enjoying it or appreciating what I've done! We live in such a disposable society, that even our outfits are yesterdays news after one spin around the party, so I want to take more time to enjoy the little things, and really live each year of my life--because we all know we won't be this age forever. I'll be one of Peter Pan's Lost Boy for life, but I won't always be this age, and I want to pack in as much fun as I can in the time that I have.

When I walked by the Chanel makeup counter my eyes immediately fell upon the bottle of stars and fairy dust that is their new Graphite nail polish, and I had to have it. But would it look as enchanting on as it did in the bottle? Glitter polishes are notorious for not living up to their bottle-beauty, but it looks better on if you can believe it! My nails look like an extra in a Ziggy Stardust musical, and I spend more time looking down at my sparkly hands than ever. I should have known from the beginning that Chanel could never let me down.

I, like Jay Leno, love a good denim-on-denim any day--especially if the combo is a perfect boy-fit shirt and a pair of worn-in Levis. I like vintage Levis for that curve-defining, 70's type fit, but Madewell have some great ones as well if you want to go the brand-new route. These were taken after my visit to the hairstylist earlier today. I didn't chop all of my hair off as it may appear; the cold and foggy ocean air was rolling in, so I tucked my wet hair up in the hat to stay warm--I can't believe it's already September! The Cutting Board

If you follow my blog, you know I have an obsession with short haircuts, and I bring it up all the time, and sometimes when I post about it, I get emails from readers with attached photo-suggestions for cuts they think I would like, so I piled them all up here to show you my favorites. If I were planning to chop my hair, the winning cut would be a tie between the Michelle Williams and the Mia Wasikowska. The problem for me is not the cut, but the grow out stages--especially the phase between the pixie and jaw-length bob, that shit scares me. And, I'm also afraid that if I cut it, I'll never grow it out again after I find out how easy it is to wash it--right now it's a long thick mess, and I dread the shower. And I'd also have to plan out a whole new wardrobe strategy, infusing a lot more girly bits into the mix, and shelving a lot of my boy clothes. I have this whole short hair storyboard in my head; I imagine I'd wear a lot of breton stripes, and mascara, and all of a sudden become dainty and sweet, and sit in the window of a coffee shop in Paris reading poetry. That's my cropped vision.

Did that whole "don't wear white after Labor Day" thing ever really exist? I sit and wonder if people really feared that rule when getting dressed, and did they actually follow it? Who made that up anyway? I'm going to have to ask my Granny for an interview on the subject. If it were my rule, it would be "don't wear white if you're eating chips and salsa, martinis, or barbeque."

Happy Birthday to Freddie Mercury! On what would have been his 65th birthday, Google Doodle paid homage to King Mercury on their search page with this tribute video that shows off a lot of Freddie's costumes fusing art and technology. And speaking of costumes--I had to bring out the white jeans and sequins in Freddie's honor, they always seem to remind me of his 70's and 80's fashion moments, plus my checkered leotard onezie is at the cleaners. He is definitely missed.

Great life tip: you can rationalize almost anything when it's your birthday. But sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised, for example this blazer: I ordered it for myself a few days ago, but was surprised when one of my best friends gave it to me today, so the one I ordered myself is going back from whence it came. These were taken when we were waiting for our dinner reservation during a July mini-vacation. I like clothes that are easy to travel with that give you lots of reusable possibilities, and you can't go wrong with striped tees, denim jackets, and leather pants--all three are easy to interchange with other things so your suitcase doesn't overflow, or worse; weigh too much at the airport. For frequent flyers, portly suitcases can start to add up to some major bucks if you're a repeat offender like me. I'm already having anxiety over packing for the fashion week insanity in September, but settling down isn't really in the plans. Simply stated: the road is life.

My pal Letty from LA Dama sent me these ballet slippers, very much keeping with my latest style muse: 1970's Freddie Mercury. This time I'm channeling Freddie from the record sleeve of their 1978 album Jazz (and me, being very much the ham had to get his pose recreated just right, see below). Ballet slippers were a big staple of Freddie's, sporting them on and off stage. They say "real men wear pink," but I'd like to add ballet slippers to that as well.

That's me doing my best Zoolander impersonation when I still had virgin hair--kids, if you're listening, don't dye your hair [finger wagging]! Will I ever have the patience to let my real hair grow back? Only time will tell (translates to probably not). Right now I have my strawberry roots growing in with slight hints of the old brown dye, and the bleach to cover it all up, and somehow I'm back to square one. Bleach is a strange addiction, and a hard one to break, and of course: the grass is always greener. Funny thing is I hate blonde hair, well I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. I always seem to gravitate towards the people blessed with dark luxurious locks, not porn star blondes--think less Orange County housewife, more Lou Doillon-esque Parisian badass. Added bonus, I think darker hair is much more flattering after the toe-headed phase of youth has worn off. My two options: 1. Chopping it all off and starting from scratch, or 2. Finding a gifted wonder-working colorist.

Summer Break

Taking a break from Aaron's birthday weekend to ingest lots of H2O and greasy food before heading out for round three tonight. Last night I got to hang out with my best friends from high school at his birthday party and talk about all the bazaar things we got ourselves into; don't worry guys--I'll never tell. I also got a chance to talk about all the girl-things that my guy friends could care less about, as Aaron says, "In one ear, and out the other." Guys can appreciate lots of things, but relationship quandaries, cute girls and boys, clothes, and hair are usually not their speed. It's nice to talk to someone who understands the plight of dry over-dyed broomstick-dry hair, the should-I or shouldn't-I just chop it all off, and what color is the right color dilemma. Ahh, that's what girlfriends are for.

We're kicking off Aaron's birthday right with a dinner party tonight, and a few different parties and celebrations lasting every day through the weekend. His official birthday is tomorrow, and all our friends are coming out to celebrate at a really fun spot of Aaron's choosing. We spent the last few days on the beach, and the time in the sun was much-needed to gain the utmost relaxation possible before the birthday-partying begins. My birthday is next month, and I use that as an excuse to celebrate every day in August, Aaron is much more conservative; he only took one week.

I was so honored to find out that Parvin Jahanshad (check out her site here) illustrated another picture of me! (You can check out the other illustrations she did here). I'm such a huge fan of her work, she really captures emotion so well. Below is a time-lapse video of her working on the picture, and it is pretty mind blowing to see how fast she works, and her attention to detail. It's so unreal when things like this are shown to me, it's beyond flattering, and really such an honor. My most sincere thanks to Parvin Jahanshad.

(P)LEATHER DADDY

These were taken the other day in Aaron's studio--he wanted to test some new strobe lighting, while I was testing my Freddie Mercury look circa 1979 , a.k.a. "The Live Killers Tour" when the pleather trousers and cop hats were in full effect. I recently found an entire concert from that era on YouTube, recorded live at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, Japan on April 25th 1979. Part one is posted below, and I left links to the rest of the four-part concert underneath--a must-watch for any classic rock fan. Nobody brings the live shows quite like Queen! Freddie, this one's for you, darling!

Weekend Warrior

I went on a mini-holiday this weekend to shoot some photos for an awesome Japanese magazine, and I'm never very good at packing; I always try to bring way too much, and at the same time I forget the most important things--socks anyone? But something I can't travel without: a good selection of soft t shirts, and I'm very thankful to the people at LNA Clothing (for more info click here!) for sending me a giant package of their stuff (including that dusty pink tee above), and I have been living in it--on and off the road-- for the past few months, and they are always my go-to tees. I'm finally back at home, and I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to cut this short; my DVR is full, the fuzzy slippers are on, and True Blood is calling my name.

Leaving Home Ain't Easy

It's heating up, and summer vacation is rolling on. I wore this to a concert the other day; it was too hot for the usual jacket/jean/boot concoction that I'm used to throwing together, and the hair had to go...up in a hat that is. I've had these shoes for years--I call them my naughty doll slippers, half doll shoe, half bondage contraption--but I rarely take them out for walks; they're more art than shoe for me, who is more boy than girl, and I usually wear some sort of foot clunker in place of cute little things, but it doesn't mean I can't love and appreciate them in all their epic Vivienne Westwood-ness.

Bring out the bathing suits, barbeques, and buds and let the good times roll. I've been on what seems like a month long vacation living out of a bag that only has room for jeans and tees, visiting all of my best friends along the way, with a stack of mixed CD's to make the ride flow by fast (gotta keep it a little old fashioned, and I'd feel like a douche writing "a bunch of sweet mixes on my iPod touch", no offense Apple. And I don't have an iPod touch, so then I would just be lying). I've just arrived at my next destination, and I can't wait get back to the beach and see my pals this week. with a smile on my face, I strongly believe he secret to life may just involve the open road and the possibilities of the next sunrise. Summer, oh how great you are here again.
